Yoga: The Third Limb-Asana
By Christian Romans
Asana: The Third Limb of Yoga Asana is a Sanskrit word that, when translated to English, means "sitting down." This is representative of the Lotus pose of yoga, where the individual crosses their legs in an Indian fashion. Traditionally, however, the term Asana has come to relate to all aspects of the physical yoga expression. In the Western world over the past decade or so, Asana has become rapidly known. Yoga studios all across my country (USA) have been popping up to feed the excercise fad. Individuals are supposed to come into the eight limbs of yoga through the limb that they feel most comfortable, and for most individuals in the Western world, the physical practice of yoga is that place. What is most beautiful about this fact is that through the release of tension (among other things) individuals will likely learn to embrace other limbs of yoga (perhaps even without knowing it!). I know that for myself I entered into yoga through the physical practice, and have generally felt very tranquil during the process which allows me to coninue on the spiritual journey of yoga (particularly meditation for me). Physical Improvements through Asana: 1. Muscle flexibility 2. Tendon strength 3. Stamina 4. Better functioning of respiratory system 5 Empiric evidence suggest it helps control blood pressure and other issues related to the functioning of the circulatory system 6. Improvement in health problems related to stress 7. Improves sex life
