Guitar Review: BC Rich Avenge SOB (Son of Beast)
By Christian Romans
Buy Price: $220 (with insurance) List Price: $390 Store: Guitar Center Once in a while Guitar Center has some great sales. I managed to pick this guitar up at less than half the sales price. I can not really complain all that much considering the price, really; however I will try to review this as honestly as possible. Physically speaking, this guitar has a unique shape. BC Rich generally specializes in metal-player guitars, and that would definitly be the group of musicians I would recommend this guitar to. While the picture included with this review shows some white lines on the guitar, they are just glares. The guitar is a solid black, with blood red outlines. The neck is made from maple wood, and is really comfortable and smooth. There are also unique red "bat" inlays on several of the frets, which are inevitably just for show; but cool. The guitar includes one BC Rich humbucking pickup, and one knob to control the volume. The bridge is great, and the strings are very close to the fret board (which is great for playing fast, tapping, sweep picking, and does not cause pain in the fingers). The headstock has the standard, unique BC Rich style and the tuners are acceptable (perhaps my biggest complaint with the guitar itself). Soundwise, the SOB is fairly impressive. For being a $200-400 dollar guitar one should not be expecting the sound of a thousand dollar guitar, however the sound is still great. For metal, the tone is great. The most surprising aspect of this guitar for me is how beautiful the clean sound is. I actually compared it to my Mexican Fender Stratocaster, and must say it was better! This simple fact leads me to say, if you are a clean guitarist/blues guitarist or similar, and are interested in having a unique guitar (for your style) you may want to consider investing in this guitar. In my playing I try to mix styles and investigate many styles, and I have enjoyed playing blues, cleans, ethnic, classical, and metal guitar on this. This alone shows the potential this guitar has to be great. To add, this guitar is fairly loud acoustically; and can be played as an acoustic guitar. Summary: Pros- -A lightweight guitar -A great price for the quality -Pretty awsome looking -The inlays are great for a cheaper priced guitar -The guitar tone has the potential to be great, depending on the amp used and effects -Can be played acoustically, which is great -The guitar stays in tune really well, thanks to the tune-o-matic bridge. Cons- -One pickup. While it does the job, I would have prefered at least one more. -One volume knob. Some people enjoy the simplicity of one knob, however I would have liked a few more to have more control and complicate my tonality. -Some people have complained that the "paint chips easily." I have no experienced this problem, but it is to be mentioned. -The tuners can be irritating. It could be just my guitar's defect, but one of my tuners hardly moves and required me to buy a tool to move it. Overall Rating: 4/5 stars
