Guitar Package Review: Squier SA100 Beginners Pack
By Christian Romans
Buy Price: $99.99 List Price: $169.99 Store: American Musical Supply Let me start by saying that this is a starter package. By that, this is by no mean top of the line guitar and if you have any intention of performing on a stage or something similar, I would not suggest it. However, as a beginner guitar; perhaps for a child or teenager looking to learn how to play guitar, this is a pretty decent package. This package includes the Squier (by Fender) SA100 Acoustic Guitar, Acoustic Guitar Gig Bag, Pitch Pipes (for tuning your guitar), Guitar picks, and a Fender Instruction book. The guitar itself is nothing extraordinary, but enjoyable for beginners. The action is my biggest concern, especially as you play down the fret board (action is how close the strings are to the fretboard, in the case of this guitar, it is bad; meaning that the strings are not very close). This is truly my biggest problem with the guitar itself. The tone is acceptable, again nothing incredible but considering the price I am not bothered. The guitar is lightweight, which is nice. The stock strings are Martin guitar strings. They get the job done, however I would suggest a pair of nylon strings for this guitar, as they would be more comfortable to play considering the action on the guitar. In many ways, the tuners feel like they are plastic. Actually, the guitar itself ultimately feels like a toy. Is this a negative? Not necessarily. As I said already, this is for beginners, and is great for people just getting into guitar; however lacks for real serious players. If you desire to learn how to play some chord based songs, play campfire songs, or just sooth your family: this is a great guitar. The additional products that come in the package are also decent. The strap works effectively. The booklet is pretty helpful in learning and easy to read. The pitch pipe is just pointless in this day and age of electronic tuners, however I must say from experience that I do enjoy using it as a harmonica-like instrument. The gig bag is fairly useless as it feels like plastic and is difficult to get the guitar into (and for the price a case or gig bag is just unnecessary). Summary: Pros- -Inexpensive -A good guitar for beginners -All the additional products along with the guitar makes this package more useable for those who are just learning guitar -A decent tone for a beginner guitar -The fretboard is smooth and easily molds to your hand -Lightweight Cons- -The action is horrible after about the 7th fret -The stock strings are not the best, I suggest replacing them -The pitch pipe and gig bag are unnecessary -Would not be able to withstand a live setting
